Daisy, Bellis perennis

Although a most common flower throughout Europe the perennial daisy is a real survivor and appears in many forms. It is one of the first flowers to appear each year and given the right conditions is one of the few flowers here to flower all year, even in the harshest environment.

This specimen was photographed on the 6th January on the top of El Picacho, at a height of over 800 metres, a harsher environment is difficult to imagine. As you can see it has a double ray of white petals with each ray having over twenty narrow petals, surrounding a 'pin cushion' yellow disc.

The standard Bellis perennis has a double ray with around twelve somewhat broader petals.
