A Bottle Of Cognac andThe Cudeca Raffle

In June, Estepona resident Les Holland received an early 75th birthday present of a bottle of Courvoisier Cognac for his birthday due in August. It had cost £69.50 in Gibraltar and gave Les an idea, to raffle it for charity.

Les and his family are supporters of the Hospice movement as Les’s son Christopher sadly died in the Blackpool Hospice aged just 27 in 1987 and they still support the Hospice every year with a donation. Les being a regular reader of this magazine knew of the serious shortfall facing the Cudeca Hospice on Benalmadena Costa. In view of this shortfall, how could he raise a large sum of money for Cudeca?

With support from his wife Sue he asked Bob Read, the C.A.P. President, if he could raffle the bottle of Courvoisier. Bob readily agreed and with the support of Club C.A.P. along with I.C.E, The Walking Club of Fuengirola, Petanca Club Estepona, The Anglican Church in San Pedro, 41 Club Estepona, The British Legion Club Estepona, Benavista Bowls Club, Weight Watchers, The Hearing Aid Centre Estepona, Jane Machin’s Opticians Estepona, El Paraiso Country Club and members of the El Paraiso Golf Club who all kindly agreed to sell raffle tickets along with many other kind individuals and businesses. Needless to say the prizes and donations flooded in with additional offers of prizes from various local businesses and businesses in Gibraltar.

After the ‘Big Raffle’ an Auction was then held for all the extra gifts that came in. The subsequent total amount raised was €5,700 and included in this total were old Peseta notes totaling Pts 42,000 collected by Andalucía Life magazine. These came to an approximate value of €250. Grateful thanks to all who handed over their old Peseta notes to this very worthy cause.

Cudeca Hospice also received direct gifts of a wheelchair and an exercise bike for use within the Hospice plus other unused miscellaneous gifts.

Many clothes were also donated for sale in the Cudeca shop outlets.

After the raffle and auction Mrs. Joan Hunt, O.B.E., founder of the Cudeca Hospice, was presented with a cheque by C.A.P. President, Mr. Bob Read, at the luncheon held at El Paraiso Country Club on the 9th July 2008. The luncheon was also attended by the I.C.E. Club President, Mrs. Christina Woodward, the President of the Petanca Club, the President of Benavista Bowls Club and the President of the Fuengirola Walking Club.

Les and Sue gave heartfelt thanks to everyone for making the event such a success.
