Bird Watching or Twitching in Andalucia Southern Spain

February 2004, Flamingo, Phoenicopterus ruber

Flamingo

The flamingo is a nomadic bird other than during its migration. You may be lucky to spot one or two during the winter on the Marismas de Palmones however, depending on the wind direction, towards the end of February and into March, large 'V' shaped flights of these unmistakable birds follow the coast heading back into Spain and Southern France from Africa. The nearest breeding colony is at La Laguna de Fuente de Piedra near Malaga. The migration of these birds is a magnificent sight.
